- Saab 9-4X
The new Saab 9-4X is a mid-size crossover that expands the brand’s line-up to three lines: it will be positioned between the 9-3X and the new 9-5 sedan.
The exterior design features the trademark clean surfaces, and aeronautic-inspired elements such as the wraparound-effect windshield and the cockpit look underlined by the single glasshouse graphic.
The front-end, like the new 9-5, draws inspiration from the Aero X concept car, with a deep, three-port grille and ‘ice-block’-effect lighting themes.
The roofline is visually lowered and extended by a rear spoiler integrated in to the tailgate. At the rear, the lighting carries forward a signature introduced by the new 9-5 saloon.
An ‘ice-block’ bar lit by LEDs extends across the lower tailgate and wraps around the light units. Twin rhomboid-shaped exhaust tailpipes are also integrated into the lower bumper molding.
The interior can accomodate five passenegers and features a driver-focused cockpit.
The center console, stack and main instrument display are presented within a single form that sweeps up around the driver and is finished with a fibre-effect carbon trim.
References to the aviation heritage include a selectable speed read-out, and ‘joystick’ adjusters for the mesh-style air vents.
At launch the 9-4X will be available with a 2.8 liter V6 turbocharged engine, capable of 300 hp and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, XWD all-wheel-drive system and DriveSense adaptive chassis control.

Car designers are a competitive lot. Some, whose familiar names we hear often, never fail to make the grade. Even though these design superstars often move around from one automaker to another, they nonetheless find themselves sitting at the head of the class no matter where they're employed. And then there are a few designers whose obscurity is a function of their failure to produce a memorable design.

In design studios there are several designers (not too many) whom did not have the opportunity to learn how to use model making tools to work with wood, clay, resin, paint, bondo, and transfer their own design’s sections on a clay buck to turn it into a good looking car model.

This week I received an email by an italian young student passionate of Car Design asking me for help. How do I become a car designer? I explained that first of all he had to show me few drawings just to understand his level of talent before telling him the all process to follow.
Few days later I received, by email, some sketches done by him and I found a certain talent! So, according to his motivation, I wrote him back telling him that he was elegible to try for an admission interview at design schools. I explained to prepare at least 15 drawings on a A3 format, plus his quick sketches and to go visit a short list of italian design schools.

Years ago when I was a car nut, most of the car magazines I pored over agreed that the Germans made the best suspension systems. The reasoning was that cars designed in Germany, specifically for German use, had to contend with the no-speed-limit Autobanh–where rock-solid steadiness is important–as well as the centuries-old cobblestone streets of many villages, where the suspension had to provide enough cushioning to avoid a teeth-rattling ride. The Germans, it was said, had best managed to strike a balance between the need to accommodate these two extremes.

In this book, I've brought together students, tutors and alumni from the five programmes making up the curriculum so they can pass on their insights and experiences. ‘Full Circle’ is fully illustrated, contains a shared skills section and lots of wonderful student projects. The design professionals have taken the time to feed back on the projects and the featured students have provided tutorials to further inspire those about to embark on the journey.
Through my experience as a Snr Lecturer, I have learnt that many students come into Higher Education having never met a design professional, so I felt it would be incredibly valuable to also include a Q & A section. It can be very helpful to have the experiences and opinions of those who were once students themselves – this is why I have called this book ‘Full Circle’.
